Unfortunately, our pollinators are in decline, and the problem is serious. One-third of our 99 bee species are threatened with extinction on the island of Ireland. If we want them to be here to pollinate crops and wild plants for future generations, we need to manage the landscape in a more pollinator-friendly way and create a network of diverse and flower-rich habitats. The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2015-2022 is supported by over 80 governmental and non-governmental organisations who have pledged to deliver 81 actions to achieve this goal and make Ireland, North and South, more pollinator-friendly. It is a shared plan of action. Everyone, from farmers to councils, local communities, businesses, schools, gardens and transport authorities have a role to play in the Pollinator Plan.
One third of our bee species are threatened with extinction from Ireland. We know it’s because we have drastically reduced the areas where they can nest and the amount of food (flowers) our landscape provides for them. We can stand back and watch the problem happen, or we can try to do something. The All-Ireland Pollinator Plan is about all of us, from farmers to local authorities, to schools, gardeners and businesses, coming together to try to create an Ireland where pollinators can survive and thrive.
The plan provides an important framework to bring together pollinator initiatives from the North and South, and is the start of a process by which we can collectively take positive steps to protect our pollinators and the service they provide into the future. It is a shared plan of action. By working together we can reverse pollinator losses and help restore populations to healthy levels. Over the next five years this Plan aims to build a foundation to bring about a landscape where pollinators can flourish.
🌸 A Perennial Wildflower Garden and an Annual Wildflower Garden are VERY different things - using a small plot in our front garden, John shows you how to prepare the ground, which seeds and bulbs to plant and aftercare - you do not need acres of land or diggers to make a difference for the pollinators and insects 🌸
Our goal is to help you develop your gardening skills by bringing you practical, weekly tutorials giving you advice to help you with any struggles you may be having in your garden.
